Healthy Cuticle
Damaged cuticle
The cuticle is the tough outer layer we first encounter on the hair. This layer protects each strand by surrounding the inner structure. Like the scales of a fish, the cuticle has multiple scales that lay flat when they are strong and healthy. During chemical hair services, like bleaching, coloring, perming, and straightening, the solution must penetrate this area to achieve the desired result. If the cuticle is tight and resistant, the hair can be difficult to service. Once the cuticle layer has been damaged, there is no way to reverse the damage. A brand new, intact cuticle can be found on new hair growth.

Did you get this question right? Would you rather have a resistant cuticle or an easily penetrated one?
